DirecTV kicks off vidgame league
DirecTV is set to launch a professional videogaming sports league.Satcaster has linked with a series of partners, including IGN Entertainment, Microsoft’s Xbox, Mountain Dew, Fox Interactive Media and Best Buy, to create the Championship Gaming Series — a televised and online tournament dedicated to the world of the gamer. New technology will place virtual cameras within the actual games, and give audiences viewing perspectives similar to real sports. Teams will vie for what will be known as the Dew Cup, which comes with an undisclosed hefty cash prize.The Championship series is led by David Hill, DirecTV’s prexy of entertainment, a broadcast veteran originally from Fox Sports. The new group will also help develop three smaller gaming tournaments being planned for this summer, and which are being considered as a test run for next year’s series. All games will be broadcast on DirecTV, which reaches 15 million viewers.
