Tokyo-based toon house GDH’s “Afro Samurai” will bow on Spike on Jan. 4, the company announced on Tuesday.
Based on a manga by Takashi Okazaki and made by GDH’s Gonzo, the five-part series depicts the title character’s quest to avenge his father’s death, against a backdrop of soul and samurai culture.
Samuel L. Jackson voices the hero, while Ron Perlman and Kelly Hu (X2: X-Men United) also take parts. Hip-hop artist the RZA supplies the soundtrack.
The series will air in Japan next year, following its U.S. preem.
