PlayStations hit Japan auction blocks

60 gig consoles selling for $678

Only three days after the Sony PlayStation 3 went on sale in Japan on Saturday, thousands of consoles are on auction sites.

The 60 gigabyte consoles on Yahoo! Japan are selling for ¥80,000 ($678), $170 higher than retail, while the 20GB machines are attracting bids in the $539 range, $115 above list price.

Some stores reported that customers were buying consoles for brokers.

At Yodobashi Camera in Fukuoka’s Hakata Ward, most of the nearly 400 customers who waited in line all night to buy the 200 PS3 consoles in stock reportedly were working for a broker. The store sold out at 8 a.m., one hour after opening. Similar scenes were repeated at stores across the country.

Stores in Japan were supplied with just 100,000 PS3 units to sell.
