News Corp. dials China

Star to offer musicvids to China Mobile customers

BEIJING — News Corp. has found its way on to China’s smallest screens.

Conglom’s Hong Kong-based satcaster Star has tied up a landmark deal to supply musicvideos for upload to customers of China Mobile, the country’s biggest mobile telco. The musicvideos will be supplied by Star’s Channel [V].

The deal is a big step for News Corp., which has been struggling to break into the market but has been frustrated by regulatory issues.

News Corp. earlier sold a 19.9% stake in its Chinese broadcaster Phoenix Satellite Television to the state parent of Hong Kong-listed China Mobile.

The news, reported on the official Xinhua news agency, comes as News Corp. continues to hunt for local partners to launch MySpace China.

It is reportedly in talks with Chinese blog companies Bokee.com and BlogCN.com.

Last week, News Corp. struck a joint venture deal with Softbank Corp. to launch a version of MySpace in Japan.
