NBC Sports has bought fantasy-sport game company Allstar Stats and its Rotoworld Internet destination, putting them together for a relaunched Web site that will complement NBC’s carriage of “Sunday Night Football.”
The relaunching will change NBCSports.com from merely a link within MSNBC.com to a separate entity. In-depth football coverage will form the spine of the rejiggered Web site, said Gary Zenkel, exec VP of strategic partnerships for NBC Sports.
NBC television commentators including John Madden, Cris Collinsworth, Sterling Sharpe and Jerome Bettis will contribute both video and written commentary to the site throughout the football season.
Zenkel said 150 NBC owned and affiliated TV stations have signed up to attach themselves to the site. “The user will type in his zip code,” Zenkel said. “Then he’ll see a link to the site of the local affiliate, which will have program listings and local-sports-related video.”
Also linked to NBC’s Web site will be NotreDame.com. NBC has served as the broadcast outlet for Notre Dame home games for the last 15 years.
In the reorganization, Joe Gesue becomes editorial director, Tom Seeley coordinating producer and Barry Werner managing editor. The first three columnists to be signed, all from the print side, are Alan Abrahamson , Tom Curran and John Walters.
