Maple Story is played by 14 million registered users
TOKYO — The Madhouse toon shop will make a cartoon for Japanese TV based on the popular online role-playing game Maple Story, company announced.
Madhouse signed the deal with Nexon Corp., the Tokyo-based company that manages the Maple Story game in Japan.
Launched in South Korea in 2002, Maple Story is played by 14 million registered users in its home market, 1.4 million in Japan and 50 million worldwide.
Popular mainly with teens in Japan, Maple Story is played in the virtual islands, towns and cities of Maple World. Players collect items and gain powers by killing monsters. They also can customize their avatars and use them to interact with others.
Madhouse is a leading Tokyo toon shop whose work includes the TV series “Death Note” and “Devil May Cry” and animated features “Cardcaptor Sakura,” “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” and “Paprika.”
