ITunes adds Latin flavor

New section to sell Telemundo skeins, Latin music tracks

Apple is making its first targeted play for the Hispanic market, teaming with Spanish-language net Telemundo to create iTunes Latino.

New section of the mediastore is the first digital destination to sell TV shows from Telemundo and also features hundreds of thousands of Latin music tracks, musicvideos and podcasts, some of which iTunes already sold and some of which it put together for the new offering.

NBC Universal-owned Telemundo will offer episodes from the archives of its original programs, such as “Pasion de gavilanes,” “El Cuerpo del deseo” and “Decisiones.” It also will offer programs from its bilingual youth-oriented channel Mun2.

Net currently doesn’t have rights to sell digital copies of shows it imports from other Spanish-speaking countries.

Deal makes Telemundo the first Spanish-language net to start selling its skeins online, though competitors are sure to follow soon.

As with all TV shows on iTunes, episodes will cost $1.99 each to download.

“Having all this content available in a dedicated section on iTunes is a great step forward for the Hispanic market,” said Telemundo senior VP of digital media Peter Glacker.
