Universal's homevideo topper inducted into Video Hall of Fame
Universal chair — and Bruin fan — Mark Shmuger got the last laugh on Video Hall of Fame inductee Craig Kornblau Monday night during a playful salute to U’s homevid topper.
In a running gag on Kornblau’s tribute reel, a straight-faced Shmuger talked about the longstanding vid rivalry between Buena Vista and Universal while surrounded by Bruin blue-and-gold. These remarks are interspersed with cheers by Trojan cheerleaders in deference to Kornblau’s alma mater.
A Universal rep confirms the gag was in the works before UCLA’s upset victory on the gridiron last weekend, laughing, “All the stars were aligned for that one.”
DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg inducted Kornblau into the Video Hall of Fame, recalling their work together at Buena Vista Home Entertainment during the early days of homevideo. Universal co-chair David Linde and vice chair Rick Finkelstein turned out for the BevHilton bash, with prexy Ron Meyer, NBC U CEO Bob Wright, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer adding their hosannas to the taped tribute.
“The Fast and the Furious” producer Neal Moritz and Greg Hart, Amazon’s VP of movies, also were inducted at Monday’s bash thrown by Variety sister publication Video Business.
