Duo deal for mobile content
HBO and Nely Galan’s Galan Entertainment have pacted to create a skein of 90- to 120-second segments of mobile content aimed at U.S. Latinos.The mini-telenovela, titled “La traductora” (The Translator), revolves around immigrant Carmen and her bi-lingual 9-year-old daughter, Maribel, who translates for her mother, who speaks little English. The vignettes will provide Latinos with entertainment and information that includes their own “phone dictionary” containing key phrases in English. The mobile content will be available to Cingular Wireless users until the end of the year. “We’ve discovered that Latinos are more phone savvy because they are used to more advanced phone systems in Latin America,” Galan said. “There are more ways to reach Latinos other than television,” she added. Galan is developing English-language telenovelas for NBC, the first of which will be “Body of Desire” from NBC’s sister Spanish-language net Telemundo.
