Web starting prod'n on eight-part series 'Final Hour'

People will soon be able to receive programming from Discovery Communications via two new platforms: DVDs from Amazon’s online store and computer downloads from Amazon’s Unbox.

In another programming initiative, the Discovery Channel has started production on “Final Hour,” an eight-part TV series that deals with critical issues like climate change, poverty and alternatives to oil. Program will mix drama with nonfiction, but the net said all of the content will be based on scientific fact.

Amazon.com deal covers such DVD titles as “Deadliest Catch” and “Extreme Engineering” from Discovery Channel; “Honey, We’re Killing the Kids” from TLC; “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations,” from the Travel Channel; and “Battlefield Diaries” from the Military Channel. Within six months, Discovery said it will offer more than 1,000 shows.

Video downloads from Amazon Unbox will cost $1.99 apiece and be viewable on a computer or a Windows-compatible portable media player.

“Final Hour” starts with the present but dramatizes future scenarios. The drama will be punctuated by interviews with leading scientists, business and world leaders.

The Paul Lussier Co. and Rivet Entertainment are the producers of “Final Hour.” Lussier is creator, writer and co-exec producer with Cary Brokaw, Bill Latka (Rivet) and Charlie Parsons (Discovery).
