Mirren, Whitaker take home top acting trophies

“The Departed” and “Dreamgirls” took home top honors, but it was the king and queen who reigned once again when the Intl. Press Academy unveiled the winners of its 11th annual Satellite Awards.

Forest Whitaker and Helen Mirren won actor and actress in a drama for “The Last King of Scotland” and “The Queen,” respectively. Meryl Streep of “The Devil Wears Prada” and Joseph Cross of “Running With Scissors” drew the thesping nods for musical or comedy.

Drama winner “The Departed” and musical/comedy counterpart “Dreamgirls” were also recognized in the supporting categories for Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Hudson, respectively.

Meanwhile, Clint Eastwood (“Flags of Our Fathers”) and Bill Condon (“Dreamgirls”) tied for director, while Peter Morgan (“The Queen”) took home kudos for original screenplay, William Monahan (“The Departed”) for adapted screenplay. Elsewhere, “Volver” drew foreign-language film kudos, “Pan’s Labyrinth” the animated or mixed- media motion picture nod and “Deliver Us From Evil” the documentary feature prize.

Martin Landau received the Mary Pickford Award for artistic contribution to the entertainment industry, director Richard Donner was presented with the Nikola Tesla Award in recognition of achievements in filmmaking technology, and the late Robert Altman was honored with the Auteur Award in memoriam.
