Cox takes TiVo sans box

Cable operator pacts with DVR giant

Cox Communications, the fourth largest cable operator, has signed a deal to make TiVo’s DVR and interactive-advertising services available to Cox subscribers with DVR boxes.

Contract permits Cox to download TiVo’s software onto existing DVR boxes in subscribers’ homes, avoiding the need to install new boxes.

TiVo services like Season Pass recordings, WishList searches and the still-in-development KidZone will be added to existing DVR set-top boxes. KidZone, which TiVo will launch in the first half of 2007, will steer kids away from inappropriate content and toward family-friendly shows.

TiVo had previously signed a similar deal with Comcast, the largest U.S. cable operator.
