Final Draft gives the greenlight on Script

Screenwriting software co. acquires magazine

Screenwriting software concern Final Draft has acquired Script magazine via a deal for assets of Forum Publishing.

Terms of the deal, announced today, were not disclosed. Transaction includes ancillary businesses such as Scriptwriters Showcase, Take a Meeting, ScriptXpert and related Web sites.

Final Draft chief Marc Madnick told Daily Variety that he sees the deal as a logical extension of establishing 15-year-old Final Draft as the top resource for scriptwriters via education, software and support, publications, events, access and public recognition.

“I think there’s tremendous growth potential,” he added.

Madnick plans a redesign and relaunch of Script magazine in January, boosting the run from the current 25,000 to more than 40,000 with the goal of 100,000 copies in 18 months. The Script staff will remain in place under editor-in-chief Shelly Mellott and managing editor Andrew J. Schneider.

“Script has been a family business since 1989,” Mellott said. “We would never have sold our company to anyone but the Final Draft family.”

Madnick said Final Draft is on track to sell about 35,000 software licenses this year.

Final Draft and Movie Magic are the leading word-processing software programs designed for writing screenplays and teleplays.
