Ensequence taps Marenzi

Par TV prez segues to software

Gary Marenzi, former president of Paramount’s international TV arm, has been tapped prexy of Ensequence, a provider of interactive TV software and services.

Appointment is designed to enhance Ensequence’s connection to TV programmers and advertisers and rapidly expand its global presence.

Marenzi will report directly to Ensequence CEO Dalen Harrison.

Before Par, Marenzi topped MGM’s international tube unit. Marenzi told Daily Variety that his job would entail setting up or expanding business relationships with program makers, networks, platforms and advertisers, both in the U.S. and abroad.

“We want to become the standard that program makers refer to in tailoring their product for interactivity. My job is to work with them from the outset of the creative process, embedding interactivity into the product from the get-go.”

Marenzi will open an L.A. office, eventually hiring a small team, and is also looking to expand the company’s New York and London outposts. (Privately held Ensequence is based in Portland, Ore., and employs about 75 staffers.)

Most recently, Marenzi was founder and president of Marenzi & Associates, providing management advice and implementation for the entertainment industry.

He served as Par’s top international TV exec from 1997-2004, overseeing the distribution of that studio’s movies and TV shows to broadcasters and cable channels outside the U.S.

In explaining his role, he said the content community is taking its programming interactive on multiple devices — and in multiple international markets. He said Ensequence already has worked with several key companies (MTV, Sky and UKTV among them) in the U.K., where interactivity is highly developed.

During Marenzi’s 4½ years with MGM, he was responsible for the Lion’s foreign television and worldwide pay TV operations as president of the MGM Telecommunications Group. He was also the architect of that company’s long-term production alliance with Viacom’s Showtime Networks.

From 1989-92, Marenzi was based in London as president of the UIP Pay-TV Group — a joint venture of Par, MGM and Universal Pictures.

Established in 2000, Ensequence is a provider of software used to create, manage and broadcast interactive shows and commercials.
