Trials of Internet protocol TV begin

World Brief

South Korea moved a stop closer to its long-delayed rollout of Internet protocol TV with the start of trial services by a KT Corp.-led consortium.

Some 260 Seoul households will be connected to the service, which provides standard and HD broadcasting, video-on-demand, streaming Internet, multimedia messaging, video conferencing and other applications through a broadband Internet connection.

South Korea’s Ministry of Information and Communication and the Korea Broadcasting Commission will evaluate the service in January before giving approval for a full-scale launch.

Meanwhile, rival service Daum Consortium starts a trial service with 100 households today.

Disagreements between the ministry and the KBC have held up IPTV for three years, with each side claiming the right to oversee the technology.
