Online porn seller challenges Oz laws

Adultshop.com steps up campaign to legalize sale of sex films

SYDNEY — Aussie porn seller Adultshop.com has stepped up its campaign to legalize the sale of films depicting sex, arguing if arthouse films like “Shortbus” and “9 Songs” are legal, porn should be.

R18+ classifications, restricting filmgoers to 18 years and older, usually apply when sex is simulated, while pics with penetration are tagged X and banned from sale in most Australian states, though a legal quirk makes them available in the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory.

Arthouse films portraying sex often receive an R18+ classification and this is the loophole Adultshop wants to exploit.

Company has ACNielsen research data to back up its argument that non-violent erotica does not offend the population.

Australia’s Classification Review Board, the group that reassess Classification Board decisions when a party seeks a second opinion, will meet this week.
