Distrib unit picks up 'Gold'

Nonprofit film and video production and distribution unit California Newsreel has picked up domestic theatrical and DVD rights to “Black Gold,” the docu about the world coffee trade that preemed in competition at Sundance.

Pic was directed and produced by siblings Nick Francis and Marc Francis of Speak-It Films.

Fulcrum Prods.’ Christopher Hird exec produced.

Doc explores the world of coffee, from the Ethiopian farmers who grow the product to the Western coffee biz that has grown into a multibillion-dollar industry.

Film Sales Co. head Andrew Herwitz repped the pic’s rights.

Newsreel will screen the film in the Hot Docs fest, the Seattle Film Festival and the New York Human Rights Watch Film Festival before a fall rollout.
