Distributors of the Year: Esclavissat & Gornell

Kudos for international achievement in distribution and marketing at this year’s Cinema Expo goes to Warner Bros. Pictures Intl.’s Monique Esclavissat, exec veep, European distribution, and Con Gornell, executive veep, European marketing.

Esclavissat and Gornell are responsible for the development and execution of Warner Bros.’ theatrical strategy and activities for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and report to Veronika Kwan-

Rubinek, prexy of international distribution, and Sue Kroll, prexy of international marketing.

In the past year, Esclavissat and Gornell have worked on a varied slate of pics that have included such international hits as “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Batman Begins” — movies that helped Warner Bros. gross more than $2 billion internationally in 2005.

More recently Esclavissat and Gornell have been working on the 2006 releases of “Superman Returns,” “Poseidon” and “Lady in the Water.”

Esclavissat joined Warner Bros. Pictures Intl. as veep, distribution in 1998. Before that she worked in London as veep, international sales and distribution for Castle Rock Intl., served as sales director at Mayfair Entertainment and was an economist at Daiwa Securities.

Gornell joined Warner Bros. in September 1997 as veep, European media, before rising to senior veep, European marketing in 2001.

Previously, he was in charge of the Warner Bros. Pictures’ account at Grey London for five years, where he served as media director. During his career, Gornell has worked for a number of top London advertising agencies including Bartle Bogle Hegarty, Carat and WPP.

“Our business has changed dramatically over the past five years,” says Kwan-Rubinek, “and Monique has been at the forefront of the international marketplace, ensuring Warner Bros. Intl. maintains its leadership position. She has the ability and finesse to help deliver our event films as brilliantly as our art films, to venues around the world. Our field offices as well as theater owners and licensees know she’s the best there is.”

“Con is the cornerstone of my European marketing team,” says Kroll. “I can’t imagine what I’d do without him, as he’s proven to be a wonderful leader and executive. Con brings passion, energy and creative intelligence to everything he does. I’ve been particularly impressed with the relationships he’s built, not only with our filmmakers, but with management, his peers and the people he deals with in every aspect of our business.”
