Globes get animated

Toons get golden opportunity

Next year’s Golden Globes will add a category for animated feature film. Members voted last month to include the new award for the 64th annual kudofest in 2007.

Eligible pics must be feature-length (70 minutes or longer), with no more than 25% live action. If fewer than eight toons qualify, award will not be presented, in which case the films would be eligible for one of the picture categories. If there are eight or more qualifying films, they would not be eligible for best picture.

Animated category will be limited to three nominations per year.

Previously, toons such as “Beauty and the Beast,” “Toy Story” and “Shrek” have been recognized in the musical/comedy category. Change brings the number of Golden Globes categories to 25, in addition to the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
