Hong Kong telco logs mobile TV trial

PCCW will initially offer two news channels

HONG KONG — Local telco giant PCCW is launching a mobile TV trial in Hong Kong.

Conglom, which offers the much vaunted quadruple play of mobile and fixed-line phones, TV and broadband Internet, kicks off the trial by offering its own NOW Business News Channel and ATV News Channel from local pubcaster ATV. Both will be available free to its Sunday Communications subscribers.

Hong Kong, which has an intensely competitive mobile market with six rival networks, saw the first 3G mobile TV services come on stream at CSL’s 1010 in March. 1010 offers 20 infotainment channels, including BBC World, Bloomberg Television, Bikini.com Channel and others from the other pubcaster TVB.

PCCW, controlled by 39-year-old billionaire Richard Li Tzar-kai, is weighing $5 billion takeover bids for all its phone and entertainment assets from Australia’s Macquarie Bank and the U.S.’ Texas Pacific Group.
