Bing Ups the Ante

Already on record with the largest single campaign contribution in state history, producer Steve Bing has chipped in another $3.5 million
to Proposition 87, which would put a tax on oil to fund alternative
energy research. That adds to the $40 million he’s already put in. He
also surpasses the $40 million that former Northwest Airlines chief Al
Checci spent on his failed bid for governor in 1998. Oil companies have
mounted an aggressive campaign to defeat the measure, and opponents
have collectively chipped in more than $60 million for their No on 87
