Standup leaders

Sound Bite

Who says D.C. is a humorless town?

Pols and journos took to the stage of a local comedy club Sept. 28 to display their standup chops — for charity.

CNN’s Pentagon correspondent, Jamie McIntyre, as well as Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) and former Republican National Committee chairman Ed Gillespie, drew some laughs with jokes targeting those both inside and outside the Beltway.

Some, like Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.), were downright partisan, riffing on Katharine Harris, the GOP Senate candidate who certified George W. Bush‘s win in Florida in 2000.

Republicans got their yuks in courtesy of guest of honor George Stephanopoulos and his wife, Ali Wentworth, who opened the proceedings with a steamy joke at Bill Clinton‘s expense.

“The most effective politicians are funny,” says Stephanopoulos.

They have to be. The electorate is a tough crowd.
