‘Munich’ in the mail

Screeners being sent to BAFTA voters late

DVD screeners of Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” will be sent to BAFTA voters after all — but they won’t arrive in time for the first round of voting.

DreamWorks did not originally plan to mail out screeners of “Munich,” but changed its mind just before Christmas.

It became clear that the movie, which is not yet release in the U.K., would struggle to figure in the BAFTA race if voters didn’t get the chance to view it at home.

But with “Munich” due to be dispatched from the U.S. this weekend, and Monday a public holiday, BAFTA members won’t get their copies until after the first voting deadline at noon GMT on Wednesday.

This deadline will decide which films make it onto the longlists of 15 contenders. This will then form the basis for the second round of voting, from which the five nominees are chosen in each category.

DreamWorks has held eight screenings of “Munich” for BAFTA voters, but it will be touch and go whether that will be enough to get the movie through to the second round.

If it does make the longlists, however, the arrival of the screeners could turn out to be perfectly timed to give “Munich” a push into the actual nominations. The second round of voting closes at 6 p.m. GMT on Jan. 12.
