Letter to the Editor

Regarding Peter Bart’s column (“Hollywood Growing Weary of Slob Story,” Sept. 25-Oct. 1):

I do agree that men look much classier in suits than in sweatpants, pajamas and other casual attire. By the same token, women look shapelier in whaleskin corsets, but that doesn’t mean they should continue to wear them.

Face it, we live in a hot climate. Why should men wear suit jackets and ties and then have to crank up the air conditioning — all to accommodate these outmoded symbols of “respect” for their jobs? How about respect for the earth?

Japan’s Prime Minister, Junichiro Koizumi, has addressed this by wearing short-sleeved shirts to work, encouraging his country to conserve energy. Jackets and ties in hot weather should be as outdated as gas-guzzling cars.

As for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, I think he looks quite nice in his tan jacket. His views on the Holocaust, not so much…
