Japanese nets take on piracy

B'casters united against online trading of skeins

TOKYO — Japanese webs are uniting to battle pirates who copy programming from digital terrestrial feeds to sell on the Internet.

The catalyst is a survey commissioned in April by the Assn. for Promotion of Digital Broadcasting (D-PA), a TV industry federation that found online trading of pirated shows was spreading rapidly.

“We’re going to release a final report on the survey, with recommendations, this fall, but the initial findings are troublesome,” a D-PA rep said.

Using the technical expertise of Assn. of Copyright for Computer Software, D-PA intends to develop a strategy against piracy that would launch in October.

Digital terrestrial broadcasts, which began in December 2003, are now spreading from the major urban areas of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya across Japan ahead of the switch from analog to digital in July 2011.

Pubcaster NHK and the five commercial webs all operate digital terrestrial services.
