Inside Move: ‘Munich’s’ screener snafu

Screeners coded for wrong region

So the BAFTA screeners for “Munich” finally arrived in Blighty — but they didn’t work.

The long-awaited screeners, which had already missed the first voting deadline for the British Academy Film Awards, dropped through voters’ mailboxes Saturday, apparently in good time for the second round of voting.

But thanks to a lab error, the Cinea-encrypted DVDs were coded for Region 1 players, not for the Region 2 machines sent to U.K.-based BAFTA members.

With the second round of voting due to close Thursday, there appears to be no time for replacement discs to be manufactured and shipped from the U.S.

DreamWorks reps have scrambled to lay on three extra screenings of “Munich” this week in hopes of salvaging the pic’s chances.

The movie had already suffered from the failure to get the screeners out for the first round of voting, which closed Jan 4. It qualified for the second round in only two categories, director and adapted screenplay.

The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony Feb. 19 in London.
