Beijing pledges more anti-piracy hits

Ministry of Commerce spokesman asks for understanding, not doubt

BEIJING — Anti-piracy enforcers have pledged to step up their fight against intellectual property theft, but want foreigners to have more understanding for the challenges China faces, a government official said Thursday.

Chong Quan, a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, which has led China’s anti-piracy efforts, said on the org’s Web site that China had made great efforts to protect intellectual property rights and had set up a sound legal framework to do so.

“All the doubts from some countries, including the U.S., about protection of intellectual property rights in China stem from a lack of understanding of China’s situation,” he said.

His statement comes after reports last month that the U.S., Japan, Canada and the European Union are teaming up to put pressure on China at the World Trade Organization to crack down on illegally copied and pirated products.

U.S. companies reckon that piracy cost them over $2.6 billion last year in lost revenues. Pirates control a huge chunk of the market for DVDs, CDs and software.

“We hope that all WTO members, including the U.S., can acknowledge China’s firm determination, effective actions and the progress China has made in IPR protection,” Chong said.
