U.S. firms link with Beijing to set up anti-piracy zone

Congloms clean up Chaoyang district

PUSAN — The American Chamber of Commerce in China has launched an initiative with central Beijing city authorities to set up a zone downtown where they will crack down on the sale of pirated goods.

The zone in Chaoyang district, site of Beijing’s Central Business District, has been developed with Disney, Microsoft, 20th Century Fox, NBC-Universal, Time Warner and Warner Bros., all victims of rampant piracy in China.

“More customers in China understand that, despite the perceived short-term benefit, piracy destroys business opportunities, costs jobs and stymies growth. We mustn’t allow disrespect for intellectual property to damage what China has worked so hard to achieve,” said AmCham-China president Charlie Martin.

Intellectual property theft remains one of the main obstacles for U.S. companies doing business in China.

The zone will promote the sale and use of legitimate copyright products, and AmCham hopes it will be the first of many zones around China. While there were no details of enforcement measures, the Chaoyang district leaders will set up a working group that will include senior officials from the police and relevant ministries.

AmCham-China has more than 2,100 members and represents 1,000 companies doing business in China.
