Green cred: The press has bandied about names like “tree-hugger” and “hippy” to describe the Daryl Hannah for years now, and she has embraced them wholeheartedly. The city girl got her first taste of nature when her father sent her to summer camp in the Rockies. She was instantly hooked, and it set the course for a life of sustainable living and environmental conviction.
Focus: The actress has traveled across America in her 1983 bio-El Camino to promote the use of biodiesel as an alternative to gasoline, and monitors the political world for new environmental initiatives.
Latest battle: Last summer Hannah took her lifestyle online and created a weekly video blog, called DH: Love Life, showcasing international environmental issues.
Eco mantra: In November, Hannah was honored at the Artivist Film Festival after she made headlines when she was arrested for trespassing during a protest against the closure of a Los Angeles community garden, which was being torn down to make way for a warehouse.
“I got sentenced to 40 hours of community service. I thought, ‘That’s what I was doing already’,” she said in her acceptance speech. “I would really like to tell the judge that I would like a lifetime of community service.”
