Crystal feels badly about Oscar

Billy Crystal — readying his “700 Days” bow in L.A. Jan.12 – Feb.18 (and — ?) at the Wiltern having played 240 shows from N.Y. to Toronto, Chicago, Boston and SanFran — is negotiating a West End stand in London. He is also readying to direct-star in New Line’s “Have A Nice Day,” and has a second book upcoming, “Grandpa’s Little One” about granddaughter Ella. Of course, the obvious question — “Oscar” March 5? He’d been asked, of course, as recently again as last week to host , but says, “I feel badly” — but he doesn’t have the time (or strength) to ready for the job in his usual professional manner — preparing his (always great) intro movie reel and parodied songs…

In a recent obituary notice about Barry Halper, baseball memorabilia collector, it was noted that Billy Crystal had bought, at Sotheby’s auction of Halper’s collection, a Mickey Mantle glove — for $239,000. Mantle was a friend of Crystal’s — who directed HBO’s terrrif “61”. Billy has the glove preserved in a glass case in his home.

  1. Ella says:

The Academy is only trying to appeal to a fresh, more “knowing”, hip audience by choosing Jon Stewart and by showcasing supercool hip-hop music with blatant mysoginistic lyrics (but none of that offensive racist drek; it’s important be choose your target carefully.) I think the trend it to try “this year’s” ironic stand-up star every season then use Billy whenever he’s free. Soon the Oscars will be no different that an episode of Soul Train with the exception of the ever-present dress designer hype. The actual awards are just an afterthought.

  2. Tom says:

Sorry folks…or should I say I feel sorry for you folks who could believe John Stewart could hold a candle to the talents and class of Billy Crystal.

  3. Trevor says:

Jon Stewart is amazing. Kudos to the Academy for making a great choice!

  4. Stewart fan says:

I’m so over Billy Crystal. Hooray for the Academy for choosing Jon Stewart, who will do a terrific job, I’m sure!

  5. Megan says:

Does Mr. Crystal mean that he feels sad, disappointed or…bad? Or does he actually mean to say that he is losing his tactile sense? Just wondering…

  6. Trevor says:

Sad for us but perfectly understandable.
