WABC nabs instant breaking news story award

See Winners

NBC’s New York station edged out a tight field by one award at the 48th annual New York Emmy Awards held Sunday night at the Waldorf-Astoria.

Of the 80 plus kudos handed out, WNBC took home nine, followed by WCBS, the WB’s WPIX and, more surprisingly, New York City’s channel NYC-TV, all with eight wins.

WNBC went into the evening with the most nominations, 35, followed by WCBS with 30 and the YES network with 24.

One award WNBC didn’t receive was for coverage of an instant breaking news story: That award went to WABC for its coverage of the crash of an NBC helicopter.

WPIX took home the awards for both best morning and evening newscast over 35 minutes: for “WB 11 Morning News” and “WB 11 News at 10.” Fox’s WNYW won the award for best newscast under 35 minutes for “Fox 5 News” at 6 p.m.

WXTV’s Rafael Pineda, New York’s longest-serving anchorman, working since January 1972, won the on-camera achievement award for an anchorman. He was also the only Spanish-language winner of the night.

Awards are managed by the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
