JAKARTA — Indosiar, RCTI and SCTV, long Indonesia’s dominant commercial terrestrial channels, are fighting off competition from upstart web TPI.
The 14-year-old web, run by RCTI holding company Bimantara, has pushed Indosiar to third position and, for a week in early March, even managed to displace SCTV in the No. 2 slot.
While RCTI caters to upscale viewers, TPI concentrates on more blue-collar fare. It puts its success down to religious drama “Rahasia ilahi” (Divine Secret) and “Konser dangdut Indonesia” (Indonesian Dangdut Contest), a “Pop Idol”-style show for a blend of Malay and Indian music called dangdut.
Other smaller webs competing hard for the No. 4 spot in the field of 10 channels are Trans and Lativi, which airs Discovery and Nickelodeon programs.
