UPC bands with Philips for hi-def TV

Liberty Global’s UPC Broadband has pacted with Netherlands-based consumer electronics giant Philips to begin rolling out high-definition TV across 13 territories in Europe, starting with Holland early next year.

UPC will introduce a Philips-manufactured interactive HDTV settop box.

The companies said in a joint press release they are targeting the 2006 World Cup Soccer tourney skedded for June and July in Germany.

Philips and UPC will share joint marketing and promotion activities.

No date has been released for the rollout in other territories.
