RIO DE JANEIRO — Fox TV Latin America is co-producing a Brazilian skein similar to “Sex and the City.”
New show is a spinoff of romantic comedy feature “Avassaladoras” (Overwhelming Women) co-produced by local player Total Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Latin America.
Pic’s helmer, Mara Mourao, will direct the 22-episode skein, which will air on Fox’s cable network and on Brazilian feevee TV Record starting in January.
This follows a trend in Brazil, which has seen local blockbusters such as “City of God” and “Carandiru” spun off into TV series at leading net Globo.
Total and Fox have a nine-picture co-production deal, which includes the Brazilian remake of Mexican hit “Sexo, pudor y lagrimas” (Sex, Shame and Tears).
Companies next will co-produce “If I Were You,” with Daniel Filho attached to direct. For next year, they are developing an adaptation of Chilean hit “Sexo con amor.” Pic, retitled “Sexo oposto” (Opposite Sex), is debut feature of TV director Wolf Maya.
