SBT locks in Televisa telenovela

World Brief

No. 2 net SBT has renewed its agreement with Mexico’s Televisa for the rights of classic series “El chavo del ocho” for three more years for a reported $1.5 million per year, three times more than it paid for the previous contract.

Net has aired the classic 1970s series created by Mexican Roberto Gomes Bolanos since 1985. The reruns get ratings of 10 to 15 points on the 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday slot, one of the net’s biggest audiences.

The net wanted to replace “El chavo” with telenovela “Rebelde,” a Mexican remake of Argentine “Rebel Way.” The reaction from fans was so intense that SBT was forced to change the sked. “Rebelde” was put on hold indefinitely.
