NBC goes to Clear extreme

Sports event hopes to draw big ratings with big prizes

NBC has joined forces with Clear Channel to create an extreme-sports media extravaganza called the 2005 Dew Action Sports Tour.

Weekend competitions will be held once a month between June 9 and Oct. 16 at arenas in five cities — Louisville; Denver; Portland, Ore.; San Jose; and Orlando.

NBC will carry 22 hours of events including skateboarding, BMX dirt biking and freestyle motorcycling (aka motocross) on Saturdays and Sundays between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. USA will cablecast 10 hours of live extreme sports from midnight to 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Ken Schanzer, NBC Sports prexy, called the coverage by NBC and USA the largest combined commitment ever by a broadcast and cable network to extreme sports.

Sponsored by Mountain Dew, the Dew Action Sports Tour will also offer bigger prizes to the winners than any comparable extreme-sports event plus a $1 million bonus pool based on final yearend standings of the participants.
