‘Heelers’ hangs on Down Under

World Brief

SYDNEY — Embattled Oz drama had a small win as the Seven Network confirmed it would produce a new series of cop drama “Blue Heelers” in 2006.

Skein had been rumored for the ax as ratings softened and the market for Oz drama seemed less certain. Fans had launched an Internet campaign to save the show.

“All of us look forward to celebrating two milestones for ‘Blue Heelers’ — its 500th episode in February and its 510th episode when it passes another of Seven’s great iconic programs, ‘Homicide,’ to become the most successful long-running weekly drama series in Australian TV history,” says Seven’s Tim Worner. “Blue Heelers” started on Seven on 1994 and tells the story of rural police in the fictional town of Mt. Thomas. “Homicide” was a police skein that ran from 1964-76.

Production on “Heelers” will begin immediately.
