BUENOS AIRES — “Padre coraje” (Brave Father John) swept the Argentinean Assn. of Television and Radio Journalists awards ceremony, the country’s version of the Emmys, on Monday.
The “Robin Hood”-like telenovela set in 1950s Argentina picked up the Golden Martin Fierro — the fest’s top prize — and six more kudos. They were for telenovela, lead actor and actress in a telenovela (Facundo Arana and Carina Zampini), supporting actor and actress in a drama (Luis Machin and Julia Calvo) and original music.
The sweep helped second-ranked Artear-Canal 13, a unit of Argentinean media conglom Grupo Clarin, dominate the evening with 15 awards out of 60 nominations, outpacing first-ranked Telefe (owned by Spain’s Telefonica), which nabbed seven out of 37 noms.
Pol-ka Prods. produced “Brave Father John” and drama winner “Locas de amor,” the story of three recovering mental patients, which also picked up awards for director (Daniel Barone), screenwriting (Pablo Lago and Susana Cardozo) and lead actor and actress in a series (Alfredo Casero and Julieta Diaz).
Pol-ka is run by Adrian Suar, a thesp-turned-director-producer who doubles as programming manager of Canal 13. He took the post in 2001, helping keep the net’s ratings stable and even to beat 15-year leader Telefe in the ratings for several months.
“Los Roldan” (The Roldans), a comedy about a poor family that strikes it rich, was the pre-event favorite for the top prize. Airing on Telefe, it was the hottest program of 2004. But it only won comedy and lead comedy actor (Gabriel Goity).
Daniel Hadad’s Canal 9 and Carlos Avila’s America TV came in third, each winning four prizes. State-run Canal 7 went home empty-handed.
The annual kudos fest, held in the ritzy old-docks district, aired on Canal 9, with more than 600 making their way down the red carpet to attend the four-hour event. It achieved 38.5 rating points, making it the hottest program of the night.
Rival broadcasters rescheduled popular programs to other days and times on the expectation of boffo aud share.
