RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil’s terrestrial net SBT is scrambling to renew its agreement with Mexico’s Televisa to continue airing “El chavo del ocho,” after fans protested when it was axed.
SBT has carried the comedy skein about a homeless boy in Mexico City for 21 years and intended to replace it with telenovela “Rebelde,” a Mexican remake of Argentina’s “Rebel Way.”
Now it has postponed “Rebelde” indefinitely.
Reruns of “El chavo del ocho” pulled in among the net’s highest ratings in its Monday-Saturday 6 p.m. slot.
Hundreds of fans are due to attend a meeting July in Rio-based Uerj U. to protest SBT’s threat to scrap the show and to watch episodes and a lecture from Carlos Seidl, one of the local voices of the dubbed series.
