'Office' team series picked up by BBC, HBO

LONDON — Ricky Gervais’ new Brit hit, “Extras,” has been picked up for a second season by both the BBC and HBO, with two episodes of the first run still to air in the U.K. and before its Stateside preem.

Series, co-written by “The Office” team of Gervais and Stephen Merchant, has been recommissioned by BBC2 controller Roly Keating after the first four episodes averaged 3.9 million viewers and a 19% share — double the usual audience for its timeslot.

HBO will premiere “Extras” on Sept. 25 but has already exercised its option to co-produce the second cycle in a deal struck with BBC Worldwide.

Gervais and Merchant will return for the new season, which will air on BBC2 next year. Each week features a guest appearance from a high-profile thesp alongside Gervais’ character, a struggling bit-part actor.

The first season has featured Ben Stiller and Kate Winslet; Patrick Stewart will appear in the final episode.
