CNN spreads out in subcontinent

New net to be headed by former talkshow host Sardesai

LONDON — CNN is set to launch a 24-hour English-language channel in India in tandem with one of the sub-continent’s TV journalists.

CNN-IBN will be headed by former talkshow host Rajdeep Sardesai, via Indian business newsie TV18, which will roll out the channel.

CNN-IBN will use TV18’s local newsgathering experience (including 20 local bureaus) and CNN’s worldwide news coverage to provide what its backers claim is a new development for Indian auds.

Sardesai earlier this year set up Global Broadcast News.

“It will be a journalist-driven channel rooted in the realities of modern India,” Sardesai says. “With nationwide news-gathering capabilities, superior journalistic talent and a passion for news, the new service will endeavor to get the news first and direct from the ground.”

Chris Cramer, managing director, CNN Intl., says: “This service will complement CNN Intl.’s global news offering.”
