BSkyB speeds Easynet deal

Purchase of broadband provider allows triple play

LONDON — Satcaster BSkyB has snapped up U.K. broadband Internet provider Easynet for £211 million ($373.1 million) as part of an acquisition drive.

The move should enable BSkyB to compete head on with soon-to-merge cable group NTL and offer subscribers the so-called triple play of telephony, broadband and TV.

“Today’s offer reflects the exciting opportunities that now exist to combine quality entertainment with significant high-speed connections,” BSkyB’s chief executive James Murdoch said.
