Banff Rockies put BBC at summit

'Panorama,' 'Flashmob' nab trophies for Beeb

BANFF, Alberta — The BBC dominated the Banff Rockie Awards at the 26th Banff World Television Festival, in its second day Monday, with the miniseries “Blackpool” taking the grand prize and other Beeb programs bagging a half-dozen others.

” ‘Blackpool’ stood out in an excellent competitive field by virtue of its creative and innovative synthesis of music and drama in the exploration of human relationships,” said Banff founding chairman Fil Fraser.

The drama, about a local entrepreneur hoping to cash in on a change in gambling laws, also took the nod for miniseries.

Other awards for BBC fare went to “Panorama: The New Killing Fields,” which took the information and current affairs nod; “What Not to Wear: Teenage Daughters,” lifestyle program; “Flashmob: The Opera,” performance program; “Storyville: House of Saud,” a co-production with Arte in France, history and biography program; and “Dragon’s Den,” which won in the reality category, new this year.

Also from the U.K., Channel Four’s “Not Only but Always,” from playwright Terry Johnson, picked up the telepic statuette.

Fare from the U.S. and Japan took three Rockies each.

‘Housewives’ cooking

Touchstone Television’s “Desperate Housewives” drew the nod for continuing series, WGBH’s “Frontline: Ghosts of Rwanda” won for social and political doc, and “Miles Davis, Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue” took arts doc.

“Unprecedented Fabrication,” from Japan’s NHK, won in the popular science and natural history category, its “262 Hits: Ichiro’s Perspective” took for sports, and “Extracurricular Lesson: Tell Us About Your Life, Conquer the World With Smile Power” won the family and youth category.

Canuck fare did well. “Shake Hands With the Devil” took feature doc as well the statuette for Canuck program, a prize introduced this year; “Tales From the Crib” won the top animation prize; “Et Dieu crea Laflaque: mambo italaflaque” won for comedy; and a special jury prize went to “Hana’s Suitcase: An Odyssey of Hope.”

The grand HDTV prize was awarded to Finnish program “L’enfant et les sortileges” (The Bewitched Child), with the Australian science doc “Ants” finishing second.
