‘Alex’ verdict a win over syndie shows

'Judge' appeals to auds over 'Martha,' 'Tyra'

“Judge Alex” had the upper hand in national ratings among firstrun shows for the week ending Oct. 16, topping two much-hyped skeins, “The Martha Stewart Show” and “The Tyra Banks Show.”

“Alex,” which has multiple double runs, averaged a 2.1 rating, unchanged from its premiere week.

“Tyra,” which includes secondary runs in 25 of its markets, had its best week of the five that the skein has been on the air. It hit a new high of 1.8, up 20% from the prior week — the largest increase in any strip in syndication for the week.

“Martha,” which has only two double runs, had a household rating of 1.7, unchanged from the week before.

In metered markets, year-to-year in time-period growth, “Alex” ratings were up 13% in October vs. October 2004. “Martha” had a 12% boost in the year-to-year October time period, while “Tyra” was down 14%.

Of the three firstrun strips, “Tyra” was No. 1 demographically.

Besides “Tyra,” only two of the nine established talkshows saw double-digit improvement from the previous week, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “The Montel Williams Show.”

“Ellen” was up 14% from week to week to a new season high of 2.4, up 20% year-to-year.

“Montel” was up 11% from the prior week to a season high of 2.1, but down 13% year-to-year.

Three talkers had single-digit improvements, including “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which was up 7% to a new season high of 7.6, but down 3% from this time last year.

“The Dr. Phil Show” was up 8% to a season high of 5.5, up 6% from last year’s time period; “The Jerry Springer Show” was up 5% both week to week and year-to-year to a 2.0.

Returning entertainment newsmagazine firstrun strip “Access Hollywood” saw a boost in ratings, receiving its best rating since May 2, up 4% from last week to a 2.6.

Among the new off-net strips, “My Wife and Kids” and “The Bernie Mac Show” each were up 5% to a 2.2.
