ABC soars on Sunday

ABC made it three straight Sunday victories to start the season, riding “Desperate Housewives,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” to an easy triumph in all key ratings categories.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “Desperate Housewives” (10.9 rating/24 share in adults 18-49, 25.7 million viewers overall) was the night’s top show despite declining about 10% week-to-week. “Grey’s Anatomy” (8.2/19 in 18-49, 18.5 million viewers overall) and “Home Edition” (6.1/15 in 18-49, 15.0 million viewers overall) also dominated their slots, and “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (3.0/9 in 18-49, 8.8 million viewers overall) kicked off the night by standing as the top non-sports show in 18-49 at 7 o’clock.

Preliminary nationals for are deemed unreliable for Fox, which had an NFL overrun from 7 to 8 and baseball from 8-11. The Yankees-Angels game registered a 9.7 overnight household rating, up 45% vs. the comparable game a year ago.

NBC saw its dramas “West Wing” (2.5/6 in 18-49, 8.1 million viewers overall) and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” (3.8/8 in 18-49, 12.5 million viewers overall) improve vs. last week, while “Crossing Jordan” (3.8/9 in 18-49, 12.9 million viewers overall) remained the No. 2 entertainment choice at 10.

CBS received another good outing from “Cold Case” at 8 (4.0/10 in 18-49, 15.8 million viewers overall) but then fell off with original movie “Hunt for the BTK Killer” (2.6/6 in 18-49, 8.6 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 7.0/17; Fox, 4.5/11; NBC, 3.0/7; CBS, 2.8/7; WB, 1.2/3.

In total viewers: ABC, 17.0 million; Fox, 12.1 million; CBS, 11.1 million; NBC, 10.3 million; WB, 2.9 million.
