The Jocks of Summer

Celebs show their sporty side

This summer’s action stars haven’t been limited to the bigscreen.

Celebs game for a little competition have been hitting the links, courts and fields at a series of charity events and all-star occasions. Usher, Peter Gallagher and Billy Bob Thornton all have shown off their athletic side.

Events range from last week’s Gibson/Baldwin Night at the Net charity tennis match at UCLA to the Museum of Television & Radio’s celebrity golf classic in Thousand Oaks, Calif., in June. Frankie Muniz wasn’t deterred by his height disadvantage at Magic Johnson’s Midsummer’s Night’s Classic basketball game July 17 at Staples Center, while Thornton came out swinging so quickly at the Major League Baseball Legends game July 10 that announcers complained it didn’t give them enough time to plug his movie. “Desperate Housewives” star James Denton wowed the fans when he hit two homers in the same game.

Other celebs preferred games of chance, with Brad Garrett and Tobey Maguire both on hand for the New School vs. Old School poker tourney benefiting several charities July 9 in Las Vegas. Snoop Dogg performed at the Salute the Troops charity event July 23 in Hawaii, which also included a poker tourney.

And way back in May — on the same weekend “Kingdom of Heaven” kicked off the summer B.O. — Halle Berry and the Rock let their feet do the talking at the annual Revlon run/walk for breast cancer. Lest we forget: There are no stunt doubles on the charity sports circuit.
