Known as Captain Outrageous, all of Turner’s so-called follies wound up changing the course of TV.

Turner recognized the growth of the cable early on, sticking the signal to his tiny Atlanta TV station, WTCG (later WTBS) on a satellite — giving birth to the Superstation. In 1980, he launched CNN, a 24-hour news network that critics dismissed as the “Chicken Noodle Network.” Top-rated channels like Cartoon Network and TNT followed.
