Despite an hourglass figure, almond eyes and full lips that game new definition to the word “sexpot,” Italian export Sophia Loren never allowed her talent and versatility as an actress to be overshadowed by her physical allure.
At 19, she made her film debut and quickly became a star in her home country. Hollywood came knocking, and she conquered the world with her earthy sensuality. The thesp jumped continents, constantly working, always a star. In 1961, she became the first lead actor to win an Oscar for a foreign-language performance (“Two Women”).
Although still active in film and TV — she also writes cookbooks — she was awarded a lifetime achievement award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in 1991.
