'Sin City' gets a big welcome
HOLLYWOOD — On the eve of the Weinstein Bros./Disney divide, Dimension topper Bob Weinstein took a trip Monday to “Sin City,” where he was quick to extol the virtures co-helmer Robert Rodriguez.
“Harvey calls Quentin Tarantino the godfather of Miramax. I consider Robert Rodriguez to be the godfather of Dimension,” said Weinstein.
It appears that the warm fuzzies are mutual.
At the Gallery on Lindbrook after-party in Westwood, Rodriguez explained the attraction. “I work in an unorthodox manner,” he said, “and they were always looking at my career rather than movie by movie — not only giving me final cut but final say over trailers and posters.”
The helmer backed out of the DGA so he could share a directing credit on the pic with comicbook scribe Frank Miller. But Rodriguez’s rebelliousness didn’t end there — he also broke the mold with his thesps, casting “Spy Kids” alum Carla Gugino as a tough-as-leather lesbian in “Sin City.”
“When Robert believes in you as an actor, he knows you can play anything. So often in this town, you can get typecast in whatever your last role might have been,” said Gugino. “Robert creates an environment that’s comfortable to take risks in, and my belief is when you take risks, you find the best stuff.”
