Shoot the messenger: Michael Lynne

In honor of our 100th birthday, Variety invited Michael Lynne (co-CEO, New Line) to talk back about his coverage in the ‘bible of showbiz.’

Do you think Variety plays favorites?

“If Bob wants to go there, fine. I’m not going to go there. I really actually feel that we’ve had a good relationship with Variety. If I need to, I can call Peter (Bart).”

Does one piece of coverage stand out in your mind?

“At Cannes, we had amazingly good coverage. We launched ‘Lord of the Rings’ (there) before we released the picture. … The reporter from Variety was incredibly excited and showed this genuine un-cynical attitude because he was such a big fan of the books. His genuine enthusiasm … communicated the excitement, even for us, of those pictures in a way that we probably couldn’t have done.”
